The new book offers a critical view on the Auguste Victoria Foundation, a German institution in Jerusalem. The study of Heidemarie Wawrzyn focuses on the theological and political background of German Protestantism which provided the values and ideals for the Foundation's members. Wawrzyn describes the history, development and work of the Auguste Victoria Foundation from the Kaiser's Middle East visit in 1898 to the beginning of World War II.
She points out the special contribution of Deaconesses of Kaiserswerth and analyzes the relations of the Foundation's members with Jews and Arabs in Palestine. Furthermore, the author questions the establishment of the Foundation as part of a "Peaceful Crusade" in the Holy Land and examines its involvement with the NSDAP in Palestine.

"Die Thematik ist reizvoll, Wawrzyns Darstellung ist trotz mancher Doppelungen sehr informativ, gerade weil es ihr gelingt die bereits - zumeist in Aufsätzen, Broschüren, Buchkapiteln - veröffentlichte Literatur mit leichter Hand zusammenzuführen. ...
Ein Forschungsdesiderat, das allerdings auch im Kontext des AVS-Buches nicht hätte gefüllt werden können, bleibt eine eigenständige Biographie der langjährigen und in den Jerusalemer kirchlichen wie politischen Kreisen hoch geachtete Oberschwester Theodore Barkhausen, die Tochter eines nicht minder prominenten Protestanten, nämlich des langjährigen Präsidenten des preußischen Oberkirchenrats, Friedrich Wilhelm Barkhausen. (S. 37-51) Eine derartige Untersuchung wäre deshalb hilfreich, weil gerade im Bereich der deutschen Missionsgeschichtsschreibung Biographien, noch dazu solche profilierter Frauen 'on the spot' fehlen. Allerdings dürfte die Autorin auch vor dem Problem gestanden haben, zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Archivstudien nicht Zugang zu den relevanten, damals noch recht ungeordneten Kaiserwerther Archivalien gehabt zu haben. Vielleicht bietet Frau Wawrzyns Buch Anregung für weitere Studien..."

Heidemarie Wawrzyn studied religion and history at the universities of Bremen and Münster (Germany). She wrote her doctorate on antisemitism in the German women's movement 1871-1918 and published it in the diagonal-Verlag Marburg. She has been living in Israel since 1999 and conducting research on Germans in Palestine.
